We Have That? Tip #38

We have had some conversations lately that included this line: “We have that?!” And many times the answer was, “Yes, we do.” Sometimes there’s new software made accessible . . . or sometimes there’s a little tool to help you with files. Here’s a sampling:

  • Firefox: You may use Firefox as your web browser. Go to Start >> Troubleshooting >> Install Firefox.
  • Google Earth: Install Google Earth by going to Start >> General Ed >> Google Earth. (At MES, it will be under Programs.)
  • Picasa: This free program from Google is a great way to import images, print images, make collages, and share images. Go to Start >> Graphics & Layout to load the program on your computer. Use the web album to store your pictures where you can get to them from anywhere.
  • YouTube: All staff members have access to YouTube–we do block the site for students, but not staff. If you find that you don’t have access, sometimes “reminding” the filter that you’re a staff member works. Start >> Troubleshooting >> Lightspeed. If that doesn’t work, please put in a work order.
  • TuxPaint: This software is a replacement for KidPix . . . it still allows for slide shows and stamps.
  • Opening Office 2007 documents: If you receive an Office 2007 document that won’t open, install the compatibility pack. Go to Start >> Troubleshooting >> Office 2000 >> Install Office 2007 Compatibility Pack. Save the file. Open the application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Open the file.
  • Flip cameras: Eagle Point and DHS have these cameras in their LMC’s. If you’re not at those schools, but would like to try one, contact Kim Bannigan.
  • Delicious Explorer Plugin: If you’d like to set up a Delicious account to keep track of Favorites/Bookmarks and maybe share them with others, this plugin will help. Or just check out Delicious (silly name, but what can you do?) and take the trouble out of bookmarking.
